Advancing the science on climate solutions – what works?

In early June, Dr Jan Minx and colleagues from the Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change (MCC) gGmbH organised the first edition of the ‘What Works Climate Solutions Summit’, held at Technische Universität Berlin. The conference brought together >350 attendees from highly interdisciplinary backgrounds, all convening in the joint mission to strengthening the evidence basis for effective climate solutions.

With climate change unfolding at unprecedented speed, time available to decarbonise our economies and align our living standards to be compatible with our planetary boundaries is limited. Hence, the aim of the conference was to advance the science on climate solutions by building up a strong community of climate scientists who take on the challenge of synthesising the exponentially growing body of literature on climate change with the core question at hand: what works?

As part of the breakout sessions on ‘climate solutions in cities: buildings and transport’, Marcel Seger was given the opportunity to present his ongoing PhD work on demand-side flexibility of EV workplace charging. Drawing on Marcel’s former educational background in operations research, he developed an interactive web-based optimisation software tool that allows businesses of all sizes to assess the impact of EV workplace charging on their bespoke electricity consumption profile based on various EV adoption rate scenarios.
