The Association for Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member states are negotiating a region-wide digital economy framework to establish a coherent, harmonised, and rules-based approach for their digital economy ecosystem. The negotiation will include discussions on digital trade, cross-border e-commerce, cybersecurity, digital ID, digital payments, cross-border data flows, and emerging topics. In response, Pippa Amanta wrote an opinion article for the Jakarta Post, the leading English newspaper in Indonesia. She urges ASEAN leaders to integrate climate considerations in the negotiation given the clear links between digitalisation and energy consumption. As strong climate action is urgently needed, it is important to build climate safeguards into the Agreement to ensure our collective digital future is sustainable and resilient.
