Since the launch of Chat GPT in November 2022, generative AI has sparked significant debate about data privacy. Our latest study explores whether exposure to the AI hype has increased perceptions of risks and data privacy concerns, hindering the use of digital technologies that can reduce carbon emissions. Based on a survey of 2,078 participants, our preliminary results show that heightened perceptions of AI risks are linked to an increase in data privacy concerns (figure below), but such concerns do not impact usage of carbon reducing technologies in ways that we had anticipated.
