We are excited to announce the publication of our latest paper, “The Impacts of Digitalised Daily Life on Climate Change,” as part of The British Academy’s discussion paper series that explore “What are the possibilities of a good digital society.” Our research was selected as one of 13 pivotal topics in this series, highlighting the importance of understanding the intricate relationship between digitalisation and environmental sustainability.
Our paper focuses on three indirect impacts: 1) efficiency; 2) rebound; and 3) substitution in the context of energy consumption associated with the use of digital innovations in daily life activities. We outline a research agenda that supports Social Science, Humanities, and the Arts research on the environmental implications of digital engagement and conclude with policy recommendations focused on enhancing the positive climate impacts of digitalisation in daily life.

The paper is written collaboratively by Felippa Amanta, Poornima Kumar, Marcel Seger, and Dr. Emilie Vrain.
