Publication alert: New paper in npj sustainable mobility and transport

  • News

DPhil student Marcel Seger has had two reasons to celebrate on March 17: Coincidentally, on the day of his 30th birthday, his first DPhil paper, titled ‘Firm level optimisation strategies for sustainable and cost effective electric vehicle workplace charging’, was published in npj sustainable mobility and transport.

The paper explores the impact of different smart charging strategies, namely peak-, cost- and carbon emission-minimal charging, in the context of workplace charging based on real-world electricity consumption data from a global car manufacturing firm in South East England. By comparatively assessing the impact of smart charging vs. uncontrolled charging, the study provides quantitative estimates for valuing the potential arising from demand-side flexibility in an industrial manufacturing setting. Specifically, the paper finds that smart charging strategies can reduce peak loads by 28% and decrease charging costs and emissions by 9% compared to convenience charging.

Marcel would like to thank his co-authors Dr James Dixon and Dr Christoph Clement, in addition to his two main supervisors Prof Charlie Wilson and Prof Christian Brand for their unwavering support alongside the publication journey.
